Relaxation..........why have you forsaken me?

When you have a disease you are going to have your fair share of medical testing.  During  my journey I have faced quite a few medical tests , and each and every one caused me crippling anxiety.  I'm not sure why I have such a hard time relaxing , but I do.  I have various theories on the root cause of my anxieties:  Maybe it's because I'm a control freak and I feel out of control, or maybe I feel like diagnostic tests are going to find something really bad going on in my body.  I think I'll go with the control freak scenario.  When I have medical testing done, I always hear the word "relax" from the medical professionals.  I understand what it means to relax; however the execution of the word is a problem.  There are a few relaxation tips I have read about in case you suffer like I do

1.  Knowledge is power- Learn as much as you can about your procedure or test.  Talk with your Doctor beforehand and let them know about your fears.  He or She can lead you down the right path to find the information you need.  Never be afraid to ask questions!

2.  Breath control- Controlling your breath is critical during your test.  When we get nervous we have a tendency to breath way too fast.  You also need to make sure each breath is deep and not shallow.  

3.  If you are so anxiety ridden that no matter how hard you try you can't relax, talk to your Doctor about the possibility of taking an anti-anxiety medication.  To be totally honest, there have been times I've had to go this route.  Been there, done that, and it's led to successful tests.

Laughter; It's what we need everyday......all day!

One constant in my life is, laughter. It would be very hard for me to find one day in my memory banks that a giggle did not erupt from my lips. I come from a family that loves to laugh, and not just at funny things but sometimes at the completely absurd.  Laughter, hands down, just makes me feel better when I’m having bad day. Here are some important facts about laughter.

According to the Mayo Clinic Have you had a good laugh today? - Mayo Clinic , short-term benefits from laughter include:

  • Stimulating many organs and it increases the endorphins that are released by your brain.
  • Activates and relieves your stress response
  • Soothes tensions

Long-term effects include:

  • Improving your immune system
  • Increasing personal satisfaction
  • Improving your mood

Wow! Those are some wonderful health benefits from laughter. Here are a few things you can do  to get some laughter in your life.

So when life starts being too much, watch a comedy, with popcorn and a friend. (It’s much better  to share a laugh with a friend!)

Look at your old prom photos. (If that doesn’t make you laugh, I don’t know what will)

Read a funny book or listen to a comedy pod cast.

Be grateful for what you have. An attitude of gratefulness brings a smile to your lips much easier,
